Vending Machines
The drink vending machines has become one of the smallest, yet one of the most defining features of Shenmue, as well as Lucky Hit and Toy Capsules. The machines can be used to buy drinks throughout Shenmue and Shenmue II.
The drink machines, are in many ways an icon symbol of the convenience boom found throughout Japan in the 1980’s, which today has become a major part of the Japanese cityscape, at least to the eyes of westerners.
The Japanese version of Shenmue had real product placement in form of Coca-Cola drink machines. These machines had three Coca-Colas, Orange Fanta, Grape Fanta, Sprite and 2 hot Georige coffee cans available to purchase.
For the American and European version of the game, the Coca-Cola machines are swapped out with the fake brand “Bell Wood”, with similar product range.
In Shenmue II, the vending machines are branded with Sapporo, a major Japanese drink manufacturer.
The prices of the soft drinks are ¥100 in Japan (Shenmue) and $5 in Hong Kong (Shenmue II).
